FOR GIRLS AND BOYS GRADES 2 to 5

Tuesday, April 26 (no school for MCPS)

Join us for SPACE-inspired fun on Tuesday, April 26.

We'll build and program space exploration models with Lego Robotics, design and program Mars Rover video games.

Weather allowing, we'll also launch some rockets and play with The Great Adventure Lab's hand-built, battery-powered hovercraft.

Speaker: Eric Lyness, NASA space flight software systems engineer has worked on many missions including The Curiosity Rover's mobile lab SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars), which has been collecting and studying soil samples from the red planet since 2012; LADEE, which explored the lunar exosphere in 2014; MAVEN, the Mars orbiter that is still studying the upper atmosphere of that planet; and the European Space Agency's ExoMars Mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2018. (He's part of the team working on the mission's mass spectrometer MOMA, which stands for Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer ... it will be looking for signs of whether life ever existed on Mars!]

Mr. Lyness is also part of the team working on NASA's proposed DaVinci mission, which seeks to analyze the atmosphere of the planet Venus. You can see him below, with the actual Curiosity Rover in a clean room, before it launched.
